The leading flu vaccine for Australians aged 65 and older - has now been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration for those aged 50 and over.
Last year influenza caused close to 14,000 hospitalisations and three thousand deaths in adults over 50.
Griffith University's Professor Paul van Buyunder says it's important older Australians talk to their GP about the best vaccine for them.
We know that there are many common things that people can do. They can wash their hands regularly, they can avoid being in crowded places. Most importantly, they can stay at home when they're sick, so that they don't spread it to other people. But by far, the most important thing that people can do is to get themselves vaccinated to protect themselves against getting the flu, because there are a range of options available for people in different vaccines.
