The federal Health Minister has welcomed the referral of a Melbourne doctor to police, after dozens of women alleged he performed unnecessary surgeries on them.
The surgeries were treatments for endometriosis, but there was no clinical evidence to justify the procedures. The Epworth has announced an independent inquiry.
The doctor, who is no longer practicing, denies the allegations.
Health Minister Mark Butler says he's glad the doctor has been referred to Victoria Police.
We owe it to those young women to bring any wrongdoing to justice, but we also owe it to those young women to learn the lessons and do everything we can to ensure this doesn't happen again.
